The long anticipated sequel to the surprising Marvel space opera hit has arrived. The movie arrives with a lot of hype and hope but does it deliver? The Guardians of Galaxy Vol 2 hit the big screen this weekend and while the team has some new faces, the familiar ones are the key.
The premise of the movie is simple. The team is hired to save the galaxy and things go south in a hurry. Star Lord meets his Dad who wants back into his life. Relationships are strained and lives are on the line for the Guardians as they face off against an unexpected threat.
There will be no major spoilers here.
There is plenty of positives to talk about this movie.
Sure the focus is on Star Lord and who is father is, but we get a lot of insight into the remaining members. Rocket and Yondu really stood out in this movie for different reasons. We get a better insight into what Rocket is capable of aside from creating all kinds of weapons. Yondu shows more depth to his character and develops a strong connection for us.
The visuals are amazing, especially with what they did on Ego’s world. The atmosphere was a perfect setting for the duration of the movie.
The last thing we loved about the movie is while we all know it is tied in to the timeline to take us to Infinity Wars, they do not force it upon us. We did not feel Marvel was force feeding us stuff to set it up.
But like anything else, there are some negatives to the Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2.
While we loved the one liners Drax was delivering throughout, this was a departure from the first film. There his focus was on the death of Thanos. Maybe the down time spend with the team made Drax less blood thirsty. We would have thought he would have jumped at the chance to join Nebula.
Also there were a few times when the pace of the move slowed down and things seemed to feel out of place. Luckily it did not last too long.
The last thing we wanted to discuss was one of the villains, the Sovereign. They did look pretty with their gold skin but aside from the High Priestess, they appeared like whiny children.
Oh we think the post credit scenes are some of the best ones they have put in Marvel movies.
Overall it was a solid movie and worth the money to catch it in the theaters.
