The legend has returned.
Puss in Boots The Last Wish brings back some familiar faces and a handful of news ones in a tale about how we tend to look past what we have.
Somehow this move escaped our 2022 Movie List but we are glad not to have missed out on it. Maybe it is because the last Puss in Boots movie took place over 11 years ago. The trailer was enough to change our mind.
Sure the plot seems simple. Multiple factions are chasing down the wishing star to make the wish to fix their lives.
But there is nothing simple about the characters.
The movie is chock full of character arcs, where we feel their doubts and anxieties about their life and what they would want it to be. Each one learns a lesson in the end that we can all relate to.
The main villain, Jack Horner, is down right bad. Whether he is using unicorn horns to ‘accidentally’ killing his own henchmen or ignoring puppy dog eyes, there is no way to salvage him.
Thew real star is the Wolf who chases down Puss in Boots after he losses his eight life. The soft whistling tone and relentless stalking makes him a disturbing figure we would not want on our trail.
The animation was top notch. We enjoyed the tweaks Dreamworks did with the animation. They made a shift from realistic to more exaggerated touch. Also, we enjoyed how they transitioned the action scenes to make the attacks feel more physical. If they are going to continue with the character, they should keep the same art style.
In the end, if you are fan of the Shrek world, this is a movie you don’t want to pass up. Actually even if you are not a fan, this is a movie you need to see.
