The LEGO Ninjago Movie: Ignore the Branding, It Is Worth It

The LEGO Ninjago movie

Can the Ninjas keep pace with the other LEGO movies?

Though the LEGO Ninjago movie was not on our radar at the start of 2017, it became must see movie for us once we saw the trailer.

The premise was simple enough. Lord Garmadon has his plans to take over Ninjago but the team of six ninjas. Their leader, the Green Ninja happens to be Lord Garmadon’s abandoned son.

There are several positives things we thought stood out for us.

This sets up a father son dynamic throughout the LEGO Ninjago movie which worked on several levels. You get to see the ups and downs of the relationship.

Also we did enjoy the nods to the Ninjago television show which we watched when it first came out. The ringtone on Lloyd’s cellphone and the appearance of the skeleton army.

There were a few things we did not like about the movie.

For starters, product placement. Yes we know it is a LEGO movie, but it felt like the brand name was plastered all over the scenery. It was not like this in the previous movies.

Another issue we had was some of the scenes that were cut from the trailer. Actually they were edited and shot in a different setting. It brought us out of the movie and do a double take.

The last minor thing we at times the world seemed completely made of LEGO pieces and other times it did not. This was something different from the other ones like LEGO Batman. Not saying it was bad, but caught us off guard.

In the end, we would recommend any fan of the previous LEGO movies to check it out. Overall, we give this movie seven LEGO bricks out of ten.

If you had a chance to see it, let us know what you though of the LEGO Ninjago movie.
